Research interests and commitment

The growing concern about the issue of environmental pollution and global warming calls for unprecedented research efforts fostering a transition towards a greener society. I am committed to expand our scientific knowledge and advance state-of-the-art engineering applications, to accelerate an ecological transition that can no longer be postponed. In my career, I have been actively contributing to wide variety of topics related both to fundamental science and to industrial applications. Broadly speaking, I am devoted to scientific modeling, numerics, uncertainty quantification, Bayesian inference and robust optimization, with a genuine pull towards machine learning and statistical data analysis.

One of my major interests is Non-Ideal Compressible Fluid Dynamics (NICFD), a very interesting research field still presenting many unaswered questions. Beside the theoretical challenges, NICFD finds its noblest application to the realm of sustainable energies, being of the utmost importance for improving the design, ultimately the efficiency, of green power production systems.
I have a keen interest in investigating theoretical, experimental and numerical aspects concerning non-ideal gasdynamics, with a special focus on designing Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) systems. Together with many collegues and friends, I am working on modeling non-ideal gasdynamics effects, on developing numerical tools and softwares specifically devised to NICFD, on the statistical analysis of experimental observation, including thermodynamic model calibration and parameter inference, and on developing novel techniques for designing turbomachines robust to epistemic and aleatoric uncertinty.

A second (but not secondary) interests of mine is in-flight icing.
In-flight ice accretion is a quite recurring detrimental phenomenon leading to a modification of the airflow around wings, sensors and engines, to an increase of the overall weight and sometimes to the locking of control surfaces. Ultimately, it can result into a significant performance degradation, posing a serious threat to passengers safety. My efforts are pledged to developing novel and more accurate ice accretion models. In addition, I am interested in numerical aspects related to the simulation of in-flight ice accretion. I have been the leading developer (from 2012 to 2017) of the PoliMIce ice accretion code. The PoliMIce suite is now employed in several European research projects e.g., UTOPIAE (Uncertainty Treatment and OPtimisation in Aerospace Engineering, H2020 MSCA- ITN, ESR10: Uncertainty Characterisation in Multi-fidelity Anti-ice system and Design. Website: http://utopiae.eu), NITROS MSCA-ITN (Network for innovative training on rotorcraft safety, H2020 MSCA European Joint Doctorate, ESR1: Simulation and prevention of ice formation and shedding on rotorcraft) and H2020 ICE-GENESIS project (WP9, WP10, WP11) coordinated by Airbus.

Moreover, I have a keen interest in spacecraft atmospheric entry. In particular, I have been working on the quantification of the uncertainty affecting experiments devoted to investigating the behavior of ablative materials usually employed to build the heat shields that protects the spacecraft during the atmospheric entry.
